Certification

Certification

Certification against the AWS Standard is a mark of having met the global benchmark for good water stewardship.

AWS certification has three levels: Core, Gold and Platinum. Higher levels of certification are designed to drive continual improvement and stronger collaboration on shared water challenges.

AWS certificates are issued by independent conformity assessment bodies (CABs) who have achieved AWS interim accreditation. Only CABs with AWS interim accreditation are authorized to issue AWS certificates.

Steps to certification

Your route to certification has six key steps:

  1. Download the AWS Standard and familiarize yourself with the intent, the criteria and the indicators
  2. Register your intent to implement water stewardship with AWS by downloading, completing and submitting the site registration form
  3. Implement the AWS Standard: attend water stewardship training or engage an AWS accredited consultant to help
  4. Get in touch with a CAB with AWS interim accreditation (below) who can discuss process, requirements and give you an estimate of time and cost of certification
  5. Get your site(s) audited
  6. AWS certification achieved: if you conform with the AWS criteria your site’s certificate will be valid for three years, subject to successful surveillance audits.

Full requirements for certification can be read here.

US multi-national Ecolab was the first to have a site certified to the AWS Standard in 2015. Australian poultry producer Inghams quickly followed.

The experience of both Inghams and Ecolob was that AWS certification improved plant performance, both environmental and financial, improved staff morale and engaged both sites in outreach on water issues to their local communities, customers and suppliers.
